Christmas sandwiches!

I get stupidly excited whenever the shops start stocking christmas themed sandwiches and since my friends and co-workers are tired of hearing me rambling on about them, so of course I decided I should broadcast these thoughts with the world.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be reviewing a bunch of store bought christmas sandwiches and giving them a score out of 11. This will pretty much be of interest to no one but me and like three other people, but I feel it’s important that we document sandwiches so that future generations know what goes with bacon*.

*Hint - everything goes with bacon.

DC Nation and Beware the Batman - screen rant

I’m seriously geeking out at the news that not only will cartoon network’s DC nation block feature dcu shorts in the vein of the excellent showcase presents shorts, but that Aardman will be doing a Batman cartoon in their signature style!

The other stuff about the new batman cartoon doesn’t look great, but it’s a while off and I’m sure the character models can change.

Yup, I’ll be getting this as soon as it hits. Zooey Deschanel singing “Baby it’s cold outside” is one of my favourite parts of Elf.

The new 52 so far.

So we’re a few weeks into the new DC universe and to be honest I’m feeling a bit let down. The problem for me is a pretty simple one, instead of looking inwards and taking what works and removing the rest (like the wonderful Young Justice cartoon) DC seem to have spent too much time looking at everyone else and mainly Marvel for inspiration.

Lots of criticism has been lobbied at the books so far and I’m sure there will be more to come, so from my original picks here’s what’s staying and going.

  • Action Comics - keep. Morrison is doing a great job so far here.
  • Wonder Woman - keep.
  • Green Arrow - dropped until Giffen is on the book.
  • Mister Terrific - on the edge. I’m wary of art team changes
  • Superboy - keep.
  • Supergirl - on the edge. Lovely art but nothing happened.
  • Batgirl - keep
  • Batwoman - keep
  • Nightwing - keep
  • Red Hood and the Outlaws - on the edge. Nice art, badly written.
  • Frankenstein - keep
  • Grifter - dropped. It’s just Sawyer from lost.
  • Deathstroke - dropped. I’m not surprised.
  • Legion Lost - on the edge. Again, nice art, but story is a little light.
  • Animal Man - keep.
  • Swamp Thing - keep.

See here’s the thing, the books that work have that quirky DC charm, the other feel like Harras has brought a very 90s Marvel and Image feel to the books, which isn’t a direction I like to see the company going in.

DC has always been that little bit darker since Crisis in 85, but the amount of sex and violence in these books is ridiculous considering the recommended age group is 12+ and anyway, the last time I checked implied violence has always been far more effective in giving folks the heebie jeebies.

I love these designs, very playful and imaginative. The variety of styles are named after fictional characters also inspired by the 50’s lucha style; Black King (Imperial Stout), Blond Gomez (Lager) and The Vampire’s Son (Red Ale).

I want all of these!

I can’t wait for this one, plus I kinda love that they united all the gingers in the DCU on one team, Wally West better join these folks soon!
Also that logo is the best of the new DC ones so far in my mind.
